“Ten Types—One People,” 1955. “Ten Types—One People” was a Jamaican beauty contest held from 1955-1963, involving ten different competitions for women based on skin color and presumed ethnicity.

The process resulted in ten separate beauty queens, each one crowned alongside her fellow queens as a national representative:
Miss Ebony — A Jamaican girl of black complexion.
Miss Mahogany — A Jamaican Girl of Cocoa-brown Complexion.
Miss Satinwood — A Jamaican Girl of Coffee-and-Milk Complexion.
Miss Golden Apple — A Jamaican Girl of Peaches-and-Cream Complexion.
Miss Apple Blossom — A Jamaican Girl of European Parentage.
Miss Pomegranate — A Jamaican girl of White-Mediterranean Parentage.
Miss Sandalwood — A Jamaican Girl of Pure Indian Parentage.
Miss Lotus — A Jamaican Girl of Pure Chinese Parentage.
Miss Jasmine — A Jamaican Girl of Part Chinese Parentage.
Miss Allspice — A Jamaican Girl of Part Indian Parentage.

I am Miss Jasmine! Haha, but seriously this is so weird! When I’d go to bars and dudes asked for my name, I’d tell them to guess and probably 75% of the time they’d guess Jasmine. So it became my official bar fake name. When I became a suicide hotline counselor due to confidentiality agreements I had to use a fake name and of course I chose Jasmine. This year a new student in the department is CONSTANTLY confused with me (even though she really doesn’t look like me), and guess what her name is? Jasmine!! Did I mention I’m Chinese-Jamaican? Although I do feel like I look a lot more like Miss Lotus- same face shape, height, body type. My grandmother and great aunts always participated in beauty pageants in Jamaica so I wonder if this could be one of them!
In any case I love this because it shows the diversity that is Jamaican beauty. We come in all colors and like many colonized peoples, we are of many ethnicities! Like our motto says, we are truly out of many, but one people!
